Key Reflections from My Thoughts Shared in an International Conference in Oman
Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the stunning country of Oman for an International Conference hosted by the Gulf Skill Pioneers. I must confess, it was very insightful and engaging affair.
I used the world insightful and engaging because the event witnessed senior ministers and officials from the Government of Oman, leaders and influencers from no less than 20 countries of the world, and professionals from every walk of life, all under one roof—discussing ideas that could change the world.
Oh, and I must mention a truly humbling moment during the event. I was honored to receive the D-20 Leader of Influence and Changemaker Award for my contributions to global leadership. It was a surreal experience, and it reminded me of the incredible responsibility we all share in shaping the future.
Adding to the momentous occasion was the unveiling of my book- ‘Nation Calling’ among the galaxy of leaders from USA, UK, Germany, UAE etc. joining us on the stage. I even lovingly presented a copy to Dr.Shama, the visionary behind this incredible conference. Her dedication brought together this global community, sparking conversations that truly matter.
It was humbling and exciting to be part of such an esteemed gatheringand share my thoughts on “Sustainability in Human Capital & Global Leadership.”
Human capital, as we all know, is the foundation upon which sustainable growth and resilience of any society are built. Unlike physical or financial assets, human capital refers to the skills, knowledge, health, and values that individuals bring to their communities and economies.
For sustainability to become a reality, prioritizing human capital development is indispensable.
Sharing below the key points I shared at the conference:
Let’s Talk About Human Capital
Why human capital, you may ask? Well, because it’s the foundation of everything.
Think about it: the skills, knowledge, and values of individuals are what drive economies, communities, and even families.
We Indians have always believed in: Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam- ‘the world is one family’. This philosophy reminds us that we are all interconnected, and the success of one contributes to the prosperity of all. It was an underlying theme of my keynote—a call for unity and shared growth in shaping global leadership.
Education is Everything
Education is like the engine oil for human capital—you can’t run the machine without it. Take India’s SarvaShiksha Abhiyan, for example. It’s helped millions of children go to school and improve literacy rates dramatically.
And then there’s Oman, investing heavily in STEM education. The result? A new generation of innovators who are shaping the Sultanate’s future. Isn’t it amazing how education can transform lives?
Skills: The Secret Weapon
Here’s a fun fact: Did you know India’s "Skill India" initiative has trained over 50 million people? That’s like filling a stadium…a hundred times over!
Oman’s no slouch either. Their National Workforce Development Program is creating a tech-savvy workforce ready to take on global challenges. The takeaway? Skills are the currency of the future, and it’s time to start investing.
Inclusion is Non-Negotiable
I mentioned that In India, the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao abhiyaan under the leadership of our Hbl. PM Shri Narendra Modi ji has helped change how we view and value girls.
On the other side, Oman’s commitment to empowering women has seen them rise to leadership roles. This isn’t just about numbers—it’s about unlocking human potential.
As Nelson Mandela said, “Freedom cannot be achieved unless the women have been emancipated from all forms of oppression.” I couldn’t agree more.
The Magic of Emotional Intelligence
I then switched to something close to my heart—Emotional Intelligence (EQ). Why? Because great leadership isn’t just about being smart; it’s about being human.
Just imagine a leader who can stay calm under pressure, connect with their team, and make tough decisions with empathy. Isn’t that wonderful. Well, that’s the power of EQ.
Real-Life EQ
Remember how India managed the COVID-19 crisis? Through our vacchine-maitri program, and free vaccine for all Indians, our Hbl. PM Sir showed empathy, ensuring healthcare and support for the vulnerable.
Oman did something equally inspiring, supporting not just their citizens but expatriates too. These aren’t just policies; they’re acts of leadership with heart.
Can We Teach EQ?
Absolutely! Start with active listening. Add a dash of empathy. Mix in some mindfulness, and there you go. You’ve got a future leader who’s not just effective but inspiring. Just think about a world where all leaders prioritize connection and compassion. That’s the world we should aim for.
Lessons in Leadership from India and Oman
Let’s not forget what these two countries teach us about global leadership:
• Trade Ties: Did you know India and Oman trade around $10 billion annually? That’s what I call a win-win partnership.
• Going Green: From solar alliances to renewable energy projects, both nations are proving that sustainability isn’t a dream—it’s a necessity.
• Cultural Unity: Our 5,000-year-old relationship reminds us that partnerships built on respect and collaboration are the ones that last.
A Heartfelt Call to Action
After the formal sessions, we were treated to an informal group tour of Oman’s prominent sites—the Royal Opera House, Royal Museum, Al Bustan Palace, and more.
Leaders from about 20 countries joined in, and it was a fantastic opportunity to engage informally, forge meaningful connections, and exchange ideas on governance, culture, and leadership. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best dialogues happen outside conference halls, over shared experiences and open conversations.
So, where do we go from here? Let’s take inspiration from HM Sultan Haitham bin Tariq’s words: “Our shared future depends on collaboration.” And let’s not forget Mahatma Gandhi Ji’s timeless advice: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
It’s time to act with courage, nurture every individual’s potential, and build a world where empathy and innovation go hand in hand. Let’s make these aspirations our reality—together.
I hope these reflections inspire you as much as the conference inspired me. Let’s keep the momentum going, because the future we dream of is the one we create today.
Thank you.
Jai Hind.
